Gong Xi Fa Cai – Happy Lunar New Year 2012

It’s the first time that I have the possibility to celebrate New Year a second time – it’s Lunar New Year or Chinese New Year. This year is the year of the Waterdragon. It’s a very mighty and strong sign and it is occupying the 5th position in the Chinese Zodiac. The dragon symbolizes dominance and ambition, success and passion.

The words “Gong Xi Fa Cai” mean “Congratulations and be prosperous” – everybody wishes that to everyone instead of Happy New Year.

It’s so amazing to take a walk to Chinatown, have a look at the shophouses and temples which are decorated with flowers, especially cherry blossom, red and golden ornaments and mandarin orange trees in front of the doors. Incense sticks are lit and you can smell them wherever you’ll go. Everyone is wearing red or pink – because those colors can scare away evil spirits and bad fortune – and the new clothes which were bought for the New Year celebration. Gifts were given especially from the older ones to the younger. The smell of Bakkwa – Chinese salty-sweet dried meat – fish and mandarin oranges is in the air and everywhere are sweets and candies sold.

I took some pictures while we were walking through Chinatown… and maybe your wishes will come true when you find the mandarin orange wish tree ;o)))
